Why We Feel God Has Called Us to South Africa

Hello from South Africa,
After our first visit to South Africa in 2007, we fell in love with the country and felt God calling us to carry his word and help his children. The poverty here just breaks your heart, especially for the children. We found many people in South Africa, hungry for the word of God. We wanted to minister to them body and soul, so we permanently moved in February 2008.
Our work takes place in the Limpopo province between the towns of Vaalwater and Lephalale. There are a lot of orphaned, abandoned and abused children in this country. When we arrived, there was no children’s home in this area; yet there are many instances of young children who are head of household because of AIDS. The smallest child, who has no one else to abuse, kicks the dog. It’s all they know. Our goal is to rear up a new moral generation who respect all living beings. We want these children to know our love and God’s love, and we want to ensure they get a good education leading to a better future than they are facing now.
Prior to opening the Children's home, we did a lot of networking with people interested in helping children, as well as visiting other children's homes to discover best practices, so we could develop a home that would offer the best outcome for the children. We found a wonderful 90-acre piece of property away from the towns, and signed a contract to purchase it for the Children's home in June 2009. After waiting eight months, we finally got the title deed, at which time we started building on the property (April 2010). 'The Fold, SA Children’s Home', was established as a non-profit organization in South Africa which allows for tax deductible donation from South African citizens. The Fold's board consists of ten members who all have a heart for orphans. We've also obtained a tax free status, which means more of every dollar donated goes directly to help the children.
Kgaogelo, a lovable little girl, was our first orphan and came to live with us in September 2010. Then in early January 2011, two abandoned children came to live with us and in late January we were given custody of a family of four children who were abused. The changes in these children since they first arrived has been nothing short of amazing. Four of our kids now attend school. They receive extra tutoring in the afternoons because they're way behind their peers. We read the children a bible story in the evenings just after dinner. This is the best part of our day. Not only are they interacting with good questions, but we get lots of hugs and kisses when we leave them to return to our own living quarters. Their English is really coming along. They understand a lot of what we're saying but still don’t feel confident enough to speak too much in English.
We are working to create multiple independent homes on the property, each with 6-8 children. These children will grow up in a loving, supportive home environment. Our goal is to see them all become successful members of society and someday create a loving, supportive family environment for their children. The building for the second home is near completion; we only need to finish the electrical and plumbing work. However, before we can bring more children into 'The Fold', we need an additional monthly contribution of $1500 to hire staff and support the new household.
The Fold is still in its infancy. In addition to growing in size to save more children, we'd like to consider the possibility of opening our own school on the property. Education and opportunity are paramount to breaking the cycle these children were born into. As more resources become available, we'll need teachers, administrators, and maintenance type workers of all kinds (electricians, plumbers, carpenters, etc). As we grow, so will the workload.
Please contact us if you're interested in visiting us in South Africa to help out in anyway, long term or short term, or just helping financially. We have been blessed by many visitors who have made their stay a working vacation, and helped with all types of work including electric, construction, sewing, teaching and playing with the children, clearing bush, working in the garden, and many other items on our 'To Do' list. It's been a great benefit to have visitors spend time and share their love with the children. It as also gives us time to work on other needed activities. You can e-mail us at prince@princeministry.org. We also have a website at www.princeministry.org
We plan to minister in South Africa until no longer needed here. We sold most everything we owned before we left. We are both retired and are second career missionaries. This means we have our own income, and do not use any of the ministry funds for personal use. 100% of your donations go to the ministry. The blessings of this work is all we need to keep us going. The love of the children and knowing you're making a huge difference in the lives of the kids is the best payment plan in the world.
